Sensitivities about food and the lack of the ability to tolerate some food items are common problems. Unlike gluten and lactose intolerance, Salicylate is more difficult to diagnose and it is one of the real and major affair of the current age. Salicylates are widely found in variety of food products, medications and others including non-food products so it can have adverse reactions on those who cannot tolerate these. Their large existence make it even harder to diagnose whether which material is salicylate-free.
What are Salicylates?
Salicylates a group of a chemical derived from salicylic acid, mostly found in plants. Salicylate considered as the major ingredient in aspirin and other pain-relieving medications.
They also naturally exist in many fruits, vegetables, spices, non-food products and cosmetic products. Salicylates also used in the production of some toothpaste and for food preserving products.
Salicylate allergy occurs due to the excessive amount of salicylates in a person’s body, which may get symptoms related to dosage. When some people consume food having an excessive amount of salicylate, they experience some allergic reactions and their body may not function properly to metabolize these chemicals. The overdose of these chemicals may lead to death if untreated.
Causes of SalicylateAllergy
The overproduction of salicylates in a body results in salicylate allergy. The salicylate sensitivity is inflammatory mediators linked to a variety of circumstances including asthma and bowel diseases. It is more common in adults already suffering from asthma. An enzyme named cyclooxygenase to give rise to the overproduction of leukotriene may also cause salicylate allergy.
Symptoms of Salicylate Allergy
Salicylate sensitivity provides various symptoms that imitate illness and allergic reactions, including:
- Stuffy nose
- Abdominal pain
- Swelling of tissues
These symptoms can also vary from person to person. Some people experience even after a small number of chemicals in their bodies while others react after bearing excessive amount of chemical in their body.
Foods containing Salicylates
A variety of food including fruits, vegetables, and spices contain salicylate, which proved to be harmful to salicylate sensitive people. As salicylate is in various spices so there is always a chance of it to be in other foods having these spices.
Cucumber, Okra, Broccoli, Eggplant, Sweet Potato, Watercress, Spinach, Broad beans, Capsicum, Tomato, Radish and Olives.
Apricot, Blackberry, Blackcurrant, Cherries, Dates, Guava, Plum, Pineapples, Raspberries, Orange, Strawberries, plums and Rockmelons.
Spices and Herbs:
Aniseed, Curry, Dill, Oregano, Ginger, allspice, clove, mustard, cumin, rosemary, paprika, thyme, fish-paste, meat paste, white vinegar, Worcester sauce.
Tea, vinegar, almonds, chestnuts, honey, chewing gums, pickles, olives, food coloring, Aloe Vera, fruit flavorings.
They also exist in non-food products including:
- Mint flavored toothpaste
- Shampoos and conditioners
All these minor ingredients when used in any other make that food salicylate also. Those people who are extremely sensitive to salicylate are restricted to the intake of the food containing these.
Although, aspirin has established to medicate various diseases and to cure illness therefore most of the time it becomes difficult to diagnose whether which material is salicylate free. However, here are no specific laboratories for the diagnosis of salicylate. The only test for salicylate intolerance is the exposure, which involves investigating the small amount of salicylic acid in the body.
As the medications like aspirin contains higher amount of salicylate than other foods, so it is not necessary that it should be avoidable. Because medication is, only for curing some disease so it can be use when there is a high demand as per need under special observation.
Although, some medications involve rich quantity of salicylate and only those are helpful for curing an illness so there is not always a need to avoid all those items containing salicylate. As if aspirin plays, an important role in treatment of many diseases but it is also rich in salicylate compounds and it is still used.
Is there a need to avoid Salicylate?
People experiencing major problems from salicylates must avoid the intake of food, which contain this material. However, people who are less likely to be the victim of it have no need to avoid such materials having salicylates or even a doctor has prescribed them to do so. Although, food rich in salicylates roved to be more helpful for fighting against many diseases like colorectal cancer.
The fruits, vegetables and spices containing rich amount of these compounds aremore beneficial for health and fitness as, they contain vitamins, minerals and potent plants that are helpful for keeping a person physically healthy. Researches showed that the children forced to follow salicylate-restricted diet experienced much more nutritional deficiencies in comparison to those who were not on this diet.
Drawbacks of avoiding Salicylates rich products
Until now, it the only thing that has discussed is about prevention and less use of salicylate compounds. However, researchers ended up concluding that people or even the children put on a salicylate-restricted diet are more likely to appear physically weak and they lack of nutrition from their bodies. As most of the time, the materials that considered salicylates are often rich in minerals and vitamins.
Salicylates are naturally occurring compound, which exist in many food items, non-food products and medication. Mostly people can tolerate the intake of these components, but some people are highly sensitive to their intake.
Those who are suffering are highly restricted to avoid them while the others who are probably less sensitive to these can have them in their diet unless their consultant asked them to avoid such products. As, these compounds have a wide range and found almost in every naturally occurring material so sometimes it becomes quite complicated to diagnose whether which material contains salicylate.
